Brindi Atwal

I am a primary school teacher, I abandoned my artistic practice after gaining my Fashion and Textile degree over 22 years ago.

Cultural conditioning under the banner of tradition and religion has had a huge impact on choices I made in my early life and led to an internal identity crisis throughout my life.

The exploration of dual-identity is within the realm of a second-generation Sikh woman growing up in the UK is a battle that has become one of the pivotal factors dominating my art work.

My artwork includes a mix of textiles, embroidery and paperwork and paper origami sculptures.    I like the idea that paper can be both delicate but strengthened.  Paper can be manipulated, the toying of textures, multiple layers and the light play on the negative space is very exciting.
